Coldbuster

Why does Coldbuster use less energy?

While all forms of electric heating result in the release of greenhouse gas, the question is, how can you best minimise this? Conventional underfloor heating are in slab or in screed types. Having the elements in the concrete means a higher thermal mass surrounding it. This requires the elements to output more energy per square meter. The floor takes longer to warm up, and similarly takes longer to cool down.

Coldbuster elements sit directly below the floor finish and as “on demand” heating, only requires 80W/m² of the room area (rather than in slab/screed storage type heating of between 150-200W/m²)

Unlike in slab heating, Coldbuster floor heating can be separately zoned so that if you aren’t occupying some areas, they can be switched off – saving energy.

Coldbuster floor heating elements are controlled by a programmable thermostat which only turns on the heaters in discrete periods of the day, at peak periods of use.

By using a floor heating system that has a lower wattage output, it can be zoned to heat only the areas you are using, react fast enough to heat only in the times you need heating. You will reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and running costs.

With regard to solar power, it is our experience that the clients achieve the best environmental and economical gains by simply having their solar panels produce energy and supply the electrical grid during the day. Heating is mostly needed in the absence of sunlight, and while your floor will store some heat from energy produced during the day, the system will need to be boosted at night anyway.

With regard to gas fired hydronic (hot water) underfloor heating. This style of underfloor heating is best suited to larger houses where the concrete slab is still to be cast – in many cases the boiler itself can cost nearly as much an the entire electrical floor heating system. Most hydronic boilers cannot double up as domestic hot water systems for the house.

TILE Floor

The tile floor heater is the most versatile, as it may be installed in any configuration and is suitable for almost any floor covering. After the floor is primed, the tile floor heater gets stuck to the floor with the attached double sided tape and covered with an adhesive backed fibreglass mesh.

All tile floor heaters have a 2.5m long supply cord which must be connected to earth and through an earth leakage circuit breaker (RCD or Safety Switch). Coldbuster tile floor heaters are pre-configured on double sided adhesive tape and be easily reconfigured to suit any room layout.

Carpet Heating

Under Timber

Laminate products usually don’t have temperature limitations. The timber products often have a limitation on the maximum temperature allowed for floor heating – usually of the order of 27°C. Check with your flooring supplier what the limitations are for your preferred product in order to ensure you use the correct Coldbuster product.
It is important to understand that thicker timber floors act as an insulator for the floor heating, slowing down the warm up time and limiting the heat output. The average floating floor thickness is between 6 – 8mm, but some floating timber floors can be up to 19mm thick.

Coldbuster laminated panel heaters can be fitted between the underlay and the floating floor or, if the subfloor is smooth and clean, between the subfloor and the underlay, if it is the thin type. To ensure the effectiveness of the installed heater panels, do not place additional scatter rugs on top of the floating timber floors. The heater installation process is as follows– please consider this process when planning your flooring installation.

Coldbuster laminated panel heaters are available in two heating outputs: the 160W/m²panels produce a maximum temperature of 38 – 40°C and are suitable under laminate flooring. The 125W/m² panels produce a maximum temperature of 28 – 30°C and are suitable under timber flooring, in conjunction with a thermostat that will limit the maximum temperature to 27°C.

Coldbuster does not recommend thicknesses of more than 12mm. In addition, by limiting the maximum temperature to 27°C, the heating will effectively warm the floor but not the room. This is because about 8°C of the floor heat is lost to the air, limiting the maximum air temperature to 19°C, if the room is properly insulated and heat losses are minimised. Locations with sub zero temperatures will further reduce the heating output and it is recommended that an additional heating source be used with the floor heating.
